Aloha and welcome to the American Academy of Micropigmention, your partner in permanent makeup. The Academy was the first in permanent makeup organizations (ASOMSI-1985), certification, studies, publications and so much more. The leaders and members of the Academy are highly respected for their contributions to Permanent makeup starting in1979.
Here you
will find men and women who make a difference. True professionals
who deserve recognition for their achievements. Some as Board Certified
technicians and instructors. Others as vendors and yet others from every corner of the world who practice permanent makeup. Also known as permanent makeup
or cosmetic tattooing, micropigmentation is both a challenging and
rewarding profession.
The members of the Academy strive to achieve an extra measure of protection
to the public, the profession, and other professionals. Formed in1992 by Dr. Charles S. Zwerling,
MD, the Academy has grown from a handful of members to hundreds of
professionals over the past decade. Active Board Certified Members, FAAM (fellows), are listed on this website and have passed a
rigorous Board Certification examination process, a three-part objective measure
of their knowledge base. Non-active certified professionals, DAAM, are not listed on this website.
Cosmetologists, electrologists and estheticians
comprise the majority of micropigmentation professionals. Makeup artists, nurses, physicians,
fine artists and traditional tattooists also have gained expertise in micropigmentation. Unlike traditional tattooing,
micropigmentation is intended to enhance one’s appearance.
Permanent makeup can give back what time has taken away and adds what Mother
Nature forgot.
From eyeliner to brows, from lipcolor to breast restoration after
cancer surgery, from cleft lips to scars and vitiligo to alopecia,
permanent makeup professionals handle many challenging and rewarding
cases. So enjoy your time at our website and contact us if you are
interested in finding out more about this amazing profession.
Enjoy the 10 minute videotape “Guide to Permanent
Makeup” under the Consumer section.
You've come to the right place. No matter if you are a cancer survivor, looking for the best possible instructors, or trying to find a professional near you. Our members are listed by category so you can
find just what you need.
For legislators or State Health Department officials, I want to
personally welcome you to the Academy. We're happy to provide information on safe practices
and guidelines for permanent makeup professionals. These standards, set by the Academy, assure public safety.
Sincerely,
Linda H Dixon MD

Tattooing: A-Z. Chapter 25 on Cosmetic Tattooing written by Dr. Dixon. 50,000 copies were printed. Dr. Dixon began working with Dr. Goldstein on the Permanent Makeup Archives and Museum and Tattoo Museum in 2001 which is located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Goldstein and Huck Spaulding are both Emeritus Members of the Academy for their contributions to tattooing and permanent makeup.
Dr. Goldstein described the cause of tattoo allergic reactions as cadmium yellow over 30 years ago.
Dr. Dixon pioneered permanent makeup eyeliner in 1979 when she went into Skin Deep Tattoo Parlor in Maui and requested to have her eyeliner done. The tattoo artist had never heard of such a thing but agreed to try to do it if Dr. Dixon would hold still without any pain control or topical anesthetics. Dr. Dixon's eyelids were swollen shut for 3 days and very little color remained in her eyelids but it was the basis of her desire to control pain in permanent makeup with topical anesthetics that provide comfort and relief to thousands.
