BOARD CERTIFICATION EXAM
OVERVIEW
Because of the increasing need for qualified instructors,
the Academy has organized leading micropigmentation professionals
to develop appropriate test formats and questions to ensure that
the applicant is competent to instruct micropigmentation procedures.
AMERICAN ACADEMY OF MICROPIGMENTATION
Entry into the practice of micropigmentation,
as with any licensed profession, is regulated by most of the states
for the purpose of protecting the public from those people who are
unable to practice micropigmentation safely and effectively. Therefore,
candidates for certification are asked by the American Academy of
Micropigmentation to provide evidence of the candidate's ability
to deliver effective micropigmentation care and maintain appropriate
state/local business licenses for the practice of micropigmentation.
BOARD EXAMINATION
The primary evidence of competency requires the
successful completion of the Academy's Instructor Certification
Exam which tests a candidate's capabilities for safe and effective
micropigmentation practice. It is designed to test basic and advanced
micropigmentation knowledge by a written, practical, and oral exam
of health care situations requiring micropigmentation procedures.
Candidates must be board certified practitioners
and active Fellows in the AAM. They should have had at least 5 years
of clinical practice and have learned the basic information necessary
to practice safe and effective micropigmentation through various
kinds of classroom activities and clinical practice. Applicants
may even have taken other examinations constructed to determine
knowledge and understanding of clinical practice. However, any prior
"diploma" and/or "certification" will not be
accepted as proof of competency by the American Academy of Micropigmentation
or the American Board of Medical Specialties. These types of "diplomas"
and/or "certifications" have been issued by nonmedical
personal with direct conflicts of interests due to economic benefits
received by the companies from the candidates.
Since the American Academy of Micropigmentation
has been organized to promote national standards and quality assurance
to the industry by a group of highly respected physicians, nurses,
and derma technicians that are not in the business of selling equipment,
micropigmentation machines, and/or pigments, the certification examination
has been developed with strict and objective guidelines. The same
exam will be given to all applicants and all successful applicants
will be considered Certified Instructors of the American Academy
of Micropigmentation.
BASIC INFORMATION
The board examination is a one day exam given
in three parts: practical, oral, and written portions.
The practical exam will consist of the applicant's
ability to instruct treatment plans, safe and effective use of equipment,
knowledge of sterilization, and ability to handle complications.
The oral exam will consist of questions directed
towards the instructor's teaching manual that the applicant will
bring with them to the exam. The questions will center on the manual
utilized by the instructor as well as general knowledge questions
on micropigmentation as they pertain to the teaching.
The written exam will consist of approximately
100 questions organized as multiple choice questions, true/false,
and/or photo identifications. There are no separate answer sheets.
All work must be recorded only in the booklet provided for each
portion of the exam. Following administration of the examination,
the test booklets are sponsored by the Academy. The applicants will
be notified of their results by mail in about 3 weeks following
the examination. Successful applicants will receive an instructor
certification diploma with the title of Certified Instructor of
the AAM.
Unsuccessful applicants will be allowed to retake
only those portions of the exam that they did not pass at the next
available exam date. Written portions will be offered at additional
testing sites to minimize applicant travel expense. However, failure
of the practical and/or oral portion of the exam require re-testing
at the actual examination site. The cost will be $100.00 for each
section not passed or $250.00 to retake the entire exam. If an applicant
fails the exam 3 times then the applicant must take an approved
American Academy of Micropigmentation refresher course before sitting
for any additional examinations.
The Academy will make every attempt to be fair
with candidates for examination. We will continue to correct and
improve the various aspects of the exam with the help of our experts
and candidates.
